„ARCHAEOLOGY, AUTHORITY & COMMUNITY: cooperation to protect archaeological heritage“

The Estonian University of Tartu together with two partners from Estonia, three partners from Latvia and three partners from Russia, is carrying out a cross-border archaeological heritage preservation project called 'ARCHAEOLOGY, AUTHORITY & COMMUNITY: cooperation to protect archaeological heritage'.

The project idea is to preserve common archaeological heritage, to develop cross-border cooperation in the field of its protection and raise the awareness among population in border area.

The state of preservation of archaeological monuments in the Baltic Sea region has dramatically worsened due to the limited availability of financial and human resources.

The greatest damage is being caused by are economic activities and illegal excavations with metal detectors used for treasure-hunting. Moreover, many sites, which cannot be visually identified on the landscape (graves, cemeteries, sacred natural places) will be forgotten if  their location is not recorded on maps.

Among the expected results of the project is the creation of a database and maps of archaeological sites and their presentation to the municipalities and heritage protection units; visits to 800-1000 monuments during field inventories; and rescue excavations on almost 10 damaged or threatened objects.

The project creates new cross-border contacts in a network that involves in its activities up to 80 people and 12 institutions.

The total budget of the project stands at 1.7 million.

The objective of the Estonia-Latvia-Russia CBC Programmeis to promote joint development activities for the improvement of the region’s competitiveness by using its potential at the crossroads between the EU and Russia.
