Russia and Ukraine: CIUDAD project to save urban heritage to hold its final conferences

The EU-funded Cooperation In Urban Development And Dialogue (CIUDAD) project RKM_Save Urban Heritage will be hosting its final conferences in Kyiv on 28 and 29 May and in Moscow on 1 and 2 June. With a programme of workshops, guided tours and lectures, in collaboration with local administrators, universities, foundations, associations and citizens, RKM has worked to increase awareness about the importance of avant-garde and constructivist architectural heritage in Kyiv and Moscow over a two-year period.

The two events will include a main conference where the outputs of the projects will be discussed and two guided tours. “During the tours, the RKM | Application, a web tool created for those wishing to visit and learn more about avant-garde heritage in both cities, will be officially presented,” said a CIUDAD news release. The RKM | Application offers a series of interactive tourist itineraries to visit avant-garde and constructivist heritage. Using audio guides, images and text, the RKM | Application offers visitors and citizens a multimedia experience of world class architectural heritage in Kyiv and Moscow.

The final conferences will also include the presentation of the other results obtained by RKM: a signage project for avant-garde heritage; the RKM | Pilot Project for the area of Santa Sophia Reserve; the results of international student workshops and communications and awareness raising activities.

RKM is managed by the City of Rome, in partnership with the City of Kyiv, the City of Moscow, Rome’s Sapienza University, the Shukhov Tower Foundation, DOCOMOMO International and the Moscow State Academy of Municipal Economy and Construction.

The CIUDAD programme runs from 2009 to 2012 and co-finances 21 local grant projects in the Neighbourhood's South and East. The projects reflect the overall objective of CIUDAD and in particular the following themes:

• Environmental Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
• Sustainable Economic development and reduction of social disparities and
• Good governance and sustainable urban development planning.
