European Commission and Russian Cabinet to meet in largest ever executive-to-executive talks

President José Manuel Barroso and the European Commission will host the Russian Government led by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on 24 February 2011 in the largest ever executive-to-executive meeting involving the College of Commissioners and a dozen ministers of the Russian Federation.

A Commission press release said the talks would cover the full range of EU-Russia relations, namely support to Russia's modernization process, trade, energy, technological cooperation and international affairs. Several documents on energy will be signed, including an updated Early Warning Mechanism.

President Barroso said prior to the meeting: "I look forward to fruitful discussions with Prime Minister Putin and his Government. The depth of our talks will reflect yet again how deeply interdependent Russia and the European Union are, and demonstrate our shared interest in tackling common concerns through an open dialogue.”

Barroso said he expected further impulses to the EU-Russia Partnership for Modernisation. “We should also use the positive momentum to walk the home stretch of Russia's WTO accession and make substantial headway on the New Agreement between the EU and Russia, including on trade, investment and energy matters," said Barroso.

Mutual visits between the Russian Government and the European Commission have been held since 1997, most recently in Moscow in February 2009.

Ahead of the meeting, the Commission published basic facts and figures highlighting the institutional framework and key areas of the EU-Russia Partnership, including the economic relations, financial cooperation and foreign direct investment.Since 1991, a total of around €2.8 billion of assistance was provided through the EC to help smooth Russia’s transition, with some TACIS projects still being implemented until 2013. (ENPI Info Centre)
