Three TV spots to raise awareness of illegal logging in Armenia
22-09-2011
Three public service announcements (PSAs) commissioned by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have been produced with the support of the EU-funded forestry programmeENPI-FLEG, with the aim of raising awareness of the impact of illegal logging activities in Armenia. "Species go extinct, rivers dry up, homes collapse, every time you cut a tree" is the slogan of one of the three PSAs produced.
The first PSA highlights the consequences of illegal logging, such as landslides, loss of water resources, desertification, and extinction of important bird species. As for the second PSA, it builds on core values to protect the forest by drawing parallels between the branches of the tree and the family tree, which showcase the ethnic and cultural values of Armenia. Each falling branch symbolizes the loss of a family member. The last spot directly targets those cutting trees illegally for profit. When counting the profit gained from the sale, these people are called to ‘count the damage to nature’.
During the coming months, the PSAs will be broadcast by national and regional TV channels in Armenia.
The €6 million ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities. (ENPI Info Centre)
