Achievement beyond all expectation: Commissioner congratulates Neighbourhood Journalism Network at final conference

With over 700 stories produced in leading outlets across the region, 600 reporters trained and 200 editors engaged with the project, the European Neighbourhood Journalism Network (ENJN) this month marked four years of bringing the best in neighbourhood news to audiences throughout the region, and beyond.
As the project draws to a close, 200 participants from all across the ENPI region gathered in Brussels for a two-day event to discuss the key themes of ‘Policy, politics and power’.
Speaking at the event’s keynote address, EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle was effusive in his praise for all the hard work and coverage since 2007: “What we have achieved together in the area of European Neighbourhood Policy went beyond all expectations.”
Chaired by BBC Journalist and Broadcaster, Samira Ahmed, the event featured a cornucopia of top-level speakers from the European Commission, the BBC, The Economist, Gazeta Wyborcza, the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, Oxford University, Centre for European Policy Studies amongst others.
ENJN Project Director from the Thomson Foundation Richard Tynen said, “what matters most is that during the four years together the reporters, editors, the EU and civil society in the 16 participating states have all worked together to build stories that have created discussion with large audiences about what the ENP is, where it is going and what it can do.”
The ENJN project is funded under the ENPI Regional Information and Communication programme, and targets the media of the 16 neighbourhood countries. The €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme seeks to increase awareness and understanding among the citizens of the area, about the EU, its policies and relations with the Partner Countries.
