08-12-2010

Egyptian journalist Manar Attiya Salem has won the €5,000 first prize for the Arab World and the Middle East region, in the EU’s Lorenzo Natali 2010 award. Her winning article, ‘Aya breaks the wall’ highlights the issue of the trade in forced marriages among underage girls.
Manar Attiya Salem is a journalist at the lifestyle section at the newspaper Al-Ahram weekly, where she has written hundreds of articles concerning Egyptian society.
The winning article tells the story of Aya, a young girl of 14, who was forcefully married to wealthy Arabs of the Golf three times during one month, each time just for a few days. She decided to break the silence, and for the first time parents, husband and involved members of the network are judged.
Second prize went to Moroccan journalist Adama Wade for his article ‘The scandal of Ivorian cocoa’ published in Les Afriques, with third prize to Abdelkarim Chankou of Morocco for ‘Is Milouda in lethal danger?’ published in Citadine.
Created in 1992 by the European Commission, the Lorenzo Natali Prize rewards journalists committed to Human Rights, Democracy and Development.
For each geographic area the winner will receive a prize of €5,000 with €2,500 for the runner-up and €1,500 for third place.
The 2010 edition of the Prize received more than 1,100 entries from all around the world. (ENPI Info Centre)
