Tunisia: project works to develop sports and recreation space in Mahdia
29-02-2012
Three students from the National School of Architecture and Urbanism of Tunis last week presented to visiting European experts the progress of their studies on a pilot project to be carried out in Mahdia in the framework of the GOSPEL project (Governance in the context of sport as social link), part of the EU-funded CIUDAD programme. The pilot project concerns the laying out of a public space for sport and social recreation at Cape Africa, outside the medina of Mahdia, while respecting the heritage, the flora and the spiritual constraints of the site.
The students, who are about to graduate, were supervised by a school professor from Mahdia and a young architect commissioned by the GOSPEL partnership to monitor the technical component of the project.
During the working sessions, the students were able to exchange views with the international experts who came from the project’s partner cities of Marseille, Hamburg and Split.
The implementation of the pilot project is due to take place at the end of this year.
GOSPEL is funded by the EU, under the CIUDAD programme, with a budget of €529,450 to promote the exchange of best practices in sport and leisure management, assist in establishing sites and sports equipment, explore models of financing exploitation and energy management, look at ways to promote equality for women and socially disadvantaged groups to access sports and recreation, and develop event communication policy and city marketing related to sport. It is implemented by the City of Marseille, the project leader, and the city of Hamburg with the support of Trondheim (Norway) and Split (Croatia) and benefits the cities of Yerevan (Armenia) and Mahdia (Tunisia).
