Jarash ancient theatre opens its stage to the children of Jordan
04-05-2012

The ancient theatre of Jarash opens its doors – and its stage – tomorrow to the children of Jordan. On 5 May, a major educational event will take place in the Jarash archeological area, notably the Jarash South Theatre, organised by the Euromed Heritage programme's ATHENA project.
All in all, around 1,000 pupils, aged between 10 and 14, are expected to join in and enjoy the two-hour show that will be performed on stage. The event will include a quiz on ancient theatres, a poetry competition, a short operetta, a few plays, and a beat-box harmonized by a student to show the importance of acoustics.
The events are being performed by the students themselves, and by a few young people in their 20s. Firas Romoni, head of activities in the Jordanian Ministry of Education, says that even a school for the visually-impaired is working to stage a play.
The purpose of this action is to make children more aware of the importance of ancient theatres. “We want kids to learn about their cultural past, ant to appreciate the existence of such important legacy," says Nizar Al Adarbeh, the project manager. "We would also like for them to understand how important is the protection of ancient theatres, and what they can mean for future generations.”
The activity is targeted at children from Jarash public schools, those in the surrounding areas and some even from Amman.
The €1.75 million ATHENA project involving partners from Algeria, Italy, Jordan, Spain and Tunisia aims to minimize the progressive decay of ancient theatres, to support their revival as part of a wider archaeological site or urban context, and to establish an overall strategy for dealing with tangible and intangible heritage aspects.
EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
