Supporting press freedom and dialogue - 2011

With World Press Freedom Day celebrated across the world on 3 May, the ENPI Info Centre has put together a press pack highlighting the EU’s support to press freedom and dialogue in the Neighbourhood.
 
"Freedom of expression is not ensured just by adopting laws and creating institutions – it is a fundamental value, which needs to be cherished by all societies and without which no democracy can function." said European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle.
 
In the Southern neighbourhood, building on the achievements of the Arab Spring, local calls for proposals under the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights" (EIDHR) in Tunisia and Egypt are offering funding to initiatives supporting freedom of expression and independence of the media.
 
Recognising the value of dialogue and support to journalists and the media in the Neighbourhood area, the EU funds projects that range from journalism training and networking, to journalistic productions and visits, as well as organising several media awards open to journalists in the region. The press pack – available in English, French and Arabic for the South, and in Russian for the East– highlights all these elements, as well as providing useful links for further information.
