EU research funding opportunities for neighbourhood partners: a comprehensive guide
02-04-2012

The European Commission's new edition of its 'Practical Guide to EU Funding Opportunities for Research and Innovation' contains valuable and clear information about European Union research and innovation funding opportunities available to the 16 European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Tunisia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia).
This new edition is available for download as a PDF, or as an interactive website, going through each content section. It includes a full up-to-date picture of sources of funding, many of which are open to neighbourhood partners, such as the 7th Research Framework Programme or international cooperation in the field of education. It also describes specifically the research and innovation funding opportunities offered to countries and territories beyond the European Union, in the framework of Pre-accession Assistance and within the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.
Working through a series of checklists, one of the most important sections for neighbourhood partners answers the question, Can I apply for funding in my location?, giving answers, programme by programme for non-EU countries.
The guide gives detailed information about the FP7 programme, which is open to international cooperation, explaining what it is, how it is structured, funding schemes, how much funding is available, who can apply, and how to apply.
Another area open to cooperation is Lifelong learning programme and international cooperation programmes in the field of education, which includes Tempus and Erasmus Mundus, and again the guide gives clear information on how to apply and what criteria are in place or which programmes.
Finally, the guide has a specific section on opportunities under ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation programmes, explaining the programmes. The section concludes with a checklist Checklist for EU innovation and research funding: ENPI Cross Border Cooperation programmes structured around the following six key questions:
The EU is currently hosting the Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Research and Innovation Euro-Mediterranean Conference, taking place in Barcelona today and tomorrow. The conference brings together more than 300 participants from over 30 countries to define a medium- to long-term agenda for Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation.
On the occasion of the conference, the ENPI Info Centre prepared a press pack outlining ongoing cooperation in the field between the European Union and its Mediterranean partner countries. The press pack looks at research and innovation as a key axis of cooperation, with particular attention on the EU's 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7), as well as the opportunities available for Mediterranean partners at a regional, bilateral, and individual research level.
