Project plans television channel dedicated to women of the Mediterranean

A television channel is being launched, entirely dedicated to women from the two shores of the Mediterranean. The NISSA TV project is being managed by Euromed Audiovisual Productions (EAP) – a member of the Belgian network of the Anna Lindh Foundation – and was presented at the European Parliament last month in association with the four major political groups represented at the EP.

EAP says the channel will be broadcast into 43 European and Mediterranean countries. The first project of its kind, NISSA TV’s main objective is to reinforce women’s role in socio-economic, cultural, legal and political development of the Mediterranean countries.

According to the project, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as four major parliamentary groups – the EPP, the Socialists & Democrats, the Alliance of Liberal Democrats, and the Greens – have already declared their support for the NISSA TV project.

NISSA TV will establish its headquarters in Tunis and will open offices in major capitals of the Mediterranean region. Brussels will provide its administrative headquarters.

According to the project presentation, "NISSA TV will be a communication bridge between women from both sides of Mediterranean and between women from the same side. It will give voice to all socio-professional categories without exception. It will be defined as witness of the profound changes in relationships between men and women in the region."

NISSA TV aims to acts as a voice of Mediterranean women; "it will make visible their commitment in developing socio-economic, cultural, legal and political thanks through access to higher education, employment, birth control, equality of rights and duties between men and women, and recognition and appreciation of their political involvement."

The project aims to make short and long TV reports, innovative and interactive programmes, portraits, exclusive interviews, etc. NISSA TV will be available by cable, satellite and web-streaming, and will broadcast in three languages, French, English and Arabic.

The Anna Lindh Foundation for Inter-Cultural Dialogue promotes knowledge, mutual respect and inter-cultural dialogue between the people of the Euro-Mediterranean region, working through a network of more than 3,000 civil society organisations in 43 countries. Its budget is co-funded by the EU (€7 million) and the EU member states (€6 million).
