Egypt: EU closely following situation in wake of Court ruling on elections
15-06-2012

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is following the situation in Egypt very closely in the wake of yesterday's ruling by the Constitutional Court declaring the legislative framework governing the parliamentary elections unconstitutional.
In a statement issued today Ashton's spokesperson said:
"The High Representative is following very closely the situation in Egypt and takes note of the Supreme Constitutional Court’s rulings of 14 June. The exact consequences of declaring the legislative framework governing the parliamentary elections unconstitutional should be clarified as soon as possible."
Ashton called on all parties to ensure a peaceful and transparent environment for the run-off of the Presidential elections this weekend, saying the electoral process would continue to be followed closely. She stressed the fundamental importance of the democratic process and institutions, and the duty to protect basic human rights for all, saying the Egyptian people must be able to determine their own future.
"The High Representative reiterates the importance of the transfer to civilian rule as soon as possible, according to the announced timetable," the statement said, concluding: "The EU emphasises its full support to the democratic transition which must lead to a strong response to the people's demands for freedom, democracy and economic opportunity."
