EU-funded events set to promote cultural heritage in the Occupied Palestinian Territory

The Euromed Heritage (EH) Info Days in the Old City of Jerusalem on 20 June 2012 will host a presentation of the Arabic Manuscripts Digital Library of Jerusalem to the public and a  review of all the actions taken within the framework of the Euromed Heritage IV programme. The presentation will be made in the presence of the European Union Representative to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip , Mr. John Gatt-Rutter. Another major event will be organised by Euromed Heritage the following day. On 21 June. there will be  a public conference on the theme of ‘Heritage and Development’ followed by a few presentations of the EH projects’ achievements as well as the inauguration of exhibitions created or published within the Euromed-Heritage IV programme framework, the ‘Manumed’ exhibitions and the ‘Crossing viewpoints’ photo exhibition.

 
Thanks to the support received by the Manumed Libraries of the Mediterranean project within the framework of the Euromed Heritage 4 programme, libraries in Jerusalem were able to get together and to develop a single digital space to share their collectionThe partners that have decided to put together their own manuscripts’ collection to develop a single digital library are the Khalidi Library, the Budeiri Library, the Al Aqsa Library, the Al Ansari Library and the Waqf Restoration Center. In a few weeks, this online library will be able to offer free-of- charge and multilingual access to dozens of thousands of images via a simple internet connection. The libraries will also work together within a scientific committee and will be encouraged to develop joint projects to preserve and revitalise cultural heritage.
 
Three projects have recently been working on the preservation and revitalisation of cultural heritage in the Occupied Palestinian Territory: Manumed, Med-Mem and Mutual Heritage. For the first time, they will get together to endorse and disseminate to the public the results and impacts that they have achieved.
 
EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new prospects for  the development of an institutional cultural environment.
