Lebanon: EU Head of Delegation visits Palestinian refugee camps

Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, yesterday visited the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra, Shatila and Mar Elias.

Ambassador Eichhorst called for an "early resumption of negotiations in order to advance the Middle East Process”. In this context, she said that the resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict remains a strategic priority for the European Union and reiterated the EU's continued commitment for a negotiated two-State solution in order to achieve a just and last settlement for the conflict. "Heeding the aspiration of the Palestinians for statehood is a crucial element for lasting peace, stability and prosperity in the region," she added.

Ambassador Eichhorst visited a school in Sabra camp and a health centre in Shatila camp, both managed by UNRWA, where she met students and patients as well as teaching and medical staff. She also toured homes rehabilitated thanks to the support of the European Union, in Mar Elias camp. This rehabilitation work was done following the commitments made by the European Commissioner for the European Neighbourhood Policy, Stefan Füle, during his visit to Lebanon in October 2011.  She recalled that the European Union is one of the biggest donors to UNRWA in Lebanon with more than €62 million worth of ongoing projects in social development and infrastructure.
