Competitiveness Council: Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation in the spotlight

Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation will be a big subject of discussion at the Informal Competitiveness Council to be held in Nicosia, on July 19 and 20, under the Cyprus EU Presidency.

In a morning session of the meeting on July 20, research ministers from EU andEuropean Free Trade Area countries will exchange views on the promotion of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation, in an effort to reiterate the willingness to work consistently towards a renewed partnership, based on the principles of co-ownership, mutual interest and shared benefit,” said a press release issued by the Cypriot presidency of the EU.

Cypriot Minister of Health Dr. Stavros Malas will introduce the topic, followed by statements from the EU’s Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Sciences Ms Maire Geoghegan-Quinn and Italian Minister Dr. Profumo. On July 20, the Informal Competitiveness Council (Research) will be hosted by Dr. Malas, who has the responsibility for the research portfolio during the Cypriot presidency of the EU.

To facilitate the discussion, the Cyprus Presidency has prepared and circulated a discussion paper to ministers, and invited three keynote speakers: Prof. E. Brezin, Former President of the French Academy of Sciences, Prof. I. Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Prof. I. Chet, Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Speaking in April this year, Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn said that Horizon 2020, the EU's programme for Research and Innovation for the period 2014-2020, would be the principal instrument for supporting Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation. "With an overall budget of €80 billion over seven years, Horizon 2020 will present a wealth of opportunities for researchers in EU and Mediterranean countries to work together. I hope that many of you will take part," she said in April.

The EU Neighbourhood Info Centre has prepared a press pack outlining ongoing cooperation between the European Union and its Mediterranean partner countries in this area. The press pack looks at research and innovation as a key axis of cooperation, with particular attention on the EU's 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7), as well as the opportunities available for Mediterranean partners at a regional, bilateral, and individual research level.
