EU projects to train government officials on water plans preparation
31-08-2012

A training workshop aimed to train government officials from the southern Mediterranean on the preparation of water plans will be organised on 10 and 11 September 2012 in Athens, Greece, by the EU-funded project 'Sustainable Water Integrated Management – Support Mechanism (SWIM‐SM)' in collaboration with the ‘Horizon 2020 Capacity Building –Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP)’.
A press release said the main aim of the workshop was to expand the capacity of water and environment stakeholders in the project's partner countries in developing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plans and strategies.
More specifically, the training will introduce mainstreaming and participation as basic measures in planning and implementing IWRM. This would be through informing and training government water officials and stakeholders from partner countries on the following:
· Best practices and success stories from countries of the region, with emphasis on the reasons behind success and achievement of target objectives,
· Main constraints and challenges that may hinder proper planning, and lead to failure in implementing sustainable water resources management within an IWRM context,
· Common gaps encountered in the region and the appropriate measures to bridge them,
· Available opportunities and means to improve the prospects for the advancement of water resources planning and management.
The participants will be middle level national water and/or environment managers, in addition to middle level officials from relevant sectors such as agriculture, water and wastewater sectors. A limited number of NGOs will be invited to the event.
This activity is among the tasks foreseen under SWIM-SM aimed at developing mechanisms and building the capacity of partner countries on sustainable water resources management policies and practices.
Sustainable Water Integrated Management (SWIM) is a Regional Technical Assistance Programme launched by the European Commission, with a total budget of approximately €22 million, to contribute to the extensive dissemination and effective implementation of sustainable water management policies and practices in the Southern Mediterranean Region.
The Programme carries forward the results achieved by two earlier EC regional programmes, SMAP (I, II and III) and MEDA Water. SWIM consists of two major Components, which are inter-related and complement each other: a Support Mechanism funded with a budget of €6.7 million and Demonstration Projects funded with a budget of €15 million.
The Horizon 2020 initiative aims to improve the quality of life of more than 420 million citizens living in the 25 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is an umbrella programme drawing together all the policies, strategies and action plans for enhancing environmental protection. (EU Neighbourhood Info Centre)
