Euromed Gender Training addresses the image of women in the media in the Med region

Improving the portrayal of women in the media and putting an end to stereotypes is the objective of a training workshop for journalists organised by the EU-funded programme Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the EuroMed Region on ‘the image of women in the media in the Euromed region’.

A press release said 25 journalists from written, audiovisual and electronic media across the MEDA region, as well as representatives from Mediterranean partner countries (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria and Tunisia) and EU member states will participate in the training, taking place in Brussels June 27 – 29.

French, Italian and Palestinian experts will lead the training, which has a dual objective: to provide journalists with various tools for understanding and analysing the portrayal of women in the media, and to familiarise them with the Istanbul and Marrakech Ministerial Conclusions pertaining to the rights of women.

The training will focus on three topics: The international and regional (Arab and Euromed) legal framework for gender equality; Stereotypes of men and women conveyed by the media; An analysis of media discourse on questions surrounding equality.

This training session is based upon a training manual developed by the EGEP programme, which serves as part of the follow-up for the Istanbul and Marrakech Ministerial Conclusions on "strengthening the role of women in society".

Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the EuroMed Region is funded by the EU with a budget of €4.5 million under the European Neighborhood Policy. It aims at promoting three main priorities: support to the current dynamics that favour gender equality and promote women’s rights, and to the full implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and related instruments; contributing to increased knowledge of gender-based violence and support to actions addressing its occurrence and its root causes; and backing the follow-up of the conclusions and the action framework of the Istanbul Ministerial conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society.
