EU project to improve youth employability in Tunisia

The European Training Foundation (ETF) is launching a project in the governorate of Medenine, Tunisia, to ensure that education and training are better adapted to labour market needs. A press release said the launching conference, which will focus on “the human capital to the benefit of regional socio-economic development”, is taking place today, 13 March 2012, in Jerba. It is jointly organized with the Tunisian ministry of Vocational Training and Employment.

Too often, the press release says, students finish their studies and discover that the skills and knowledge they acquired are not useful to employers – a waste of public funds that the country has invested into education and training. This phenomenon increases youth unemployment and exacerbates frustration among young people. This project seeks to change the situation and involves all the concerned parties, national and regional authorities, administrations, vocational training centres, private employers, trade unions, the unemployed and the employment offices. The purpose of this innovative approach based on a public-private partnership is to influence the ongoing discussion on regional development reform.

Mr. Abdelwaheb Maatar, Minister of Vocational Training and Employment, and Mrs. Madlen Serban, ETF director, as well as other senior Tunisian and EU officials will take part in the launching conference.

The European Training Foundation is an agency of the European Union established to contribute to the development of the education and training systems of the EU partner countries. With an annual budget of €18 million, its mission is to help transition and developing countries to harness the potential of their human capital through the reform of education, training and labour market systems in the context of the EU's external relations policy.
